tripadvisorWas hoping to visit this place while in Anchorage but got here just when they were closing so we didn't get to go inside. They do have a nice stream outside with lots of salmon and some polarized sunglasses so you can see the fish better. Even though we didn't get to go inside it was still a nice stop and I will definitely make it a point to come back when we have more time and can catch them before they close.
MoreFor those of us who love to eat fish, the hatchery is an enlightening experience. From squeezing eggs out of the females and milking milt from the males, to the time the fish get released is a long and difficult process. While you can take a Trolley Tour that leaves from the Log Cabin, a much better way is to rent a car and drive yourself.
MoreI was not familiar with hatcheries before this visit. It left me feeling a bit sad to be honest. The outside area was cool, tons of salmon swimming in the stream. If you don't eat fish/meat, this place may be difficult for you to visit. You can definitely learn a lot but you may not like everything you see.
MoreWe went on the guided tour of this fish hatchery. The guide was excellent. We enjoyed the entire tour. We were here at the end of August 2019 so the salmon were not running but it still made for a good tour. A must visit in Anchorage.
MoreIs William Jack Hernandez Fish Hatchery @ 941 N Reeve Blvd the same facility with a new name??? IDK, but the William Jack Hernandez Fish Hatchery was wonderful. The pictures from earlier reviews in 2019 look like the same facility. I especially loved the artwork, both inside and out. You get to see the salmon in the stream as they are about to spawn (dark red in color), as well as the process for milking the sperm, the tanks where fish grow, and lots of placards/films about the whole process. FREE.
