It won’t take long to see the entire park, but it’s a historically significant location that’s worth a visit regardless. There are no remaining fort remnants, but the earthworks are very well maintained, and provide a great visual representation as to how the site was used for strategic defense. There are about a dozen display signs along the 1/4 mile walkway, covering Native American history, Revolutionary war, and Civil War action at this location. There are a few benches and picnic tables, and while there are no playgrounds, it’s a great place to take the kids for a short walk or game of tag.

I get excited when I see Virginia Trail signs. I love to walk and see new sights. One day I was dog-walking my niece and we decided to adventure a bit. We found the trail and it felt like maybe a quarter of a mile long. Bamboo forest, nicely manicured grass, hills (battlements?) and a sign that told you some history of the York River and the battle. Not impressed at all but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't learned something about the history of Gloucester.

I've lived in Gloucester for 13 years and never been to this park. We learned a lot about local history. Many of the signs were hard to read because it looks as if they need cleaned. But otherwise the park is well-maintained. It would be nice if the park had bathrooms.

We drove by on a cold day in December while we were in nearby Yorktown for the Christmas market and boat parade. It looks like we could take the dog and eat on a bench there, but we did not actually check for signs.
