Washington Square Park is a lively gathering place where street performers, artists, and the iconic arch capture the true spirit of New York.

An iconic spot in the heart of NYU that gets especially busy in spring and summer and whenever school is in session.I used to come here in high school with my BFF and our teen dreams felt possible. Back then it felt bigger, awe-inspiring. Now that I’m an adult it seems smaller, but that’s how memory and youth work: places and people felt larger and more magical when you were young. I spent a few minutes strolling through the paths. A few flowers were blooming on a cloudy Easter Sunday; there were families, friends, locals walking, chatting, snacking, and enjoying the mild day.

We live in New York and stopped by Washington Square Park while hosting our teen nieces, and it was a perfect mid-day pause. The park has such a lively, unmistakably NYC energy with street performers, musicians, people watching, and the iconic arch all in one place. It’s an easy spot to wander through without needing a plan, which makes it ideal when traveling with teens. There’s always something interesting happening, and it feels very much like a snapshot of everyday city life rather than a curated attraction.A great stop if you want to experience the personality of New York in a relaxed, open way.

Washington Square Park is the heart of Greenwich Village. What historically was the center of the 1960s counterculture movement, Greenwich Village is today a trendy and affluent neighborhood filled with great restaurants and nightlife. Washington Square Park retains some of that counterculture vibe especially at night. Artists, musicians and many odd folks can be found here. The Washington Square Arch is much photographed and is beautiful especially when illuminated after dark.
