tripadvisorThe Hayward Fault is a geological fault under the earth capable of generating strong earthquakes. Nearly 3 million people live directly above it. Fremont is one of about 8 cities that is located on this fault. The Fault runs right through a densely populated area. There is a sign in Central Park clearly showing what happens when the tectonic plates moved years ago, and have caused the pavement to be misaligned. It was a fascinating earthquake education for people who do not live in CA.For those who are interested in viewing the cute sign, it is located on Sail Way Drive as soon as you enter the Park from the Paseo Padre Parkway.Worth a visit
MoreI went to Central Park and saw the Hayward Fault Exposed ebhibit. Its fascinating. There is a sign in the park that indicates where it is located.
MoreI would see this outdoor exhibit almost daily when I was walking my dog around the park. It's a lil surreal seeing the ground creep from year to year.
MoreAs amateur geologists, a look at a significant fault running through an urban area is fascinating. The signs are there to be seen for those that know what to look for: rippled asphalt, misaligned curb stones, uplifted or depressed land, etc. The Hayward Fault pretty much runs through the center of downtown Fremont and many of its suburban neighborhoods where this walk is located. This is an easy walk and a good opportunity to educate yourself and your children.
MoreThis sitting and walking tour definitely wakes you up to the reality of when (not if) the FREMONT FAULT LINE (NOT !!! the Hayward Fault Line ...) can happen, and how is has moved in the past. Many of the earth marks have been removed in recent park renovations (old twisted gum tree removed, park entrance road with stepped cracks over-paved ...) but definitely a go-to, learn-up adventure, given by geologist Dr. Joyce Bluford, Curator of the Children's Museum. And if you should move 7 feet to the south on the eastern portion, or 7 feet to the north on the western portion, you will definitely know how the earth moves of its own accord and timing. Meet at the old courthouse, in the center of Central Park along Paseo Padre, parking readily available.
