Recently had an appointment at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda, California. While sitting in the waiting room area, overheard several veterans talking about hiking trails in the Hulda Crooks Park area. Having a passion for hiking, had to check out the park and these trails. Hulda Crooks Park is located on Mountain View Avenue which is located off Barton Road. The park is dedicated to Hulda Hoehn Crooks (May 19, 1896 – November 23, 1997). Hulda Crooks (Aka “Grandma Whitney”) was an American mountaineer known for her mountain climbing skills. Her statue stands in the middle of the park. This 19.6-acre park has a large grassy area, picnic tables, drinking fountains that work, lots of shady trees, biking and hiking trails. There is a playground for children, tennis, basketball and volleyball court for those that are into these activities. Restrooms are surprisingly clean. There is approximately 50+ miles of hiking trails in and around the park area ranging from moderate to advanced. Be sure to take water, cell phone and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Several of the trails will take you into remote areas and have steep inclines. Be aware of your surroundings and watch for wildlife (i.e., coyotes, roadrunners, birds, tarantulas, rattlesnakes, etc.). Also be aware that some of the trails are littered with trash from previous hikers. Parking can be difficult due to small size lot. Despite all the pitfalls, this is a great location for hiking, and one will have the opportunity to view Loma Linda and the valley below. Great park and an excellent opportunity to hike a new area while getting a bit of exercise. Will be returning.

Hilda Crooks Park is a landmark in Loma Linda. I have been here many times over the years. It’s a great place to bike or just go for a walk. It’s nice and green in the winter and the people you will see there are very friendly.
