The azalea district is spectacular. The azaleas are at their peak. But, on the opening day, someone made the ridiculous decision to barricade every street in the district for a marathon. We had to detour out of the district and not being from Tyler, we had no idea how to get back. We tried asking two policemen how to get back. They were so disrespectful and belligerent we were stunned. It really put a damper on the morning. We did get directions back and by them the barricades were down. They really need to rethink doing such a ridiculous thing, inconveniencing people that have come from out of town in order to hold a marathon with people trying to get into the specific neighborhood.

The Tyler azaleas are a wonderful demonstration of civic pride and reminiscent of an earlier time in America. It's an attraction that truly delivers and costs nothing. Late March and early April is typically the best time to visit. This year's Azalea Trail is beautiful. It starts at the Goodman-LeGrand House & Museum. From there, drive south on Broadway. Once you get past the downtown buildings, the trail is well-marked with signs. The highlight is definitely Pyron Garden with convenient parking. You can easily linger for 30-60 minutes. There were lots of friendly people about when we visited. An 87-year old great grandmother and her 4-year old great grandson both loved it.

Looking forward to another trip to Tyler to see the azaleas. Have been many times before and it always is a great trip to see these blooming beauties!Does anyone have a bloom report even though the Azalea Festival is just starting??

Well, we went to the historic district and drove the Azalea Trail. A bit surprised to report that we saw about 4 bushes. Maybe the storm last night knocked them all out but must admit it was not what we expected to see.

I was an azalea belle and a Tyler ambassador. I loved my job! The azalea’s are absolutely beautiful and I think everyone in the world should see them. The Pyron home has the most beautiful garden and Mrs. Pyron is the sweetest lady. Overall, the experience is amazing, I could be in that garden forever. I only wish that they would bring back the Azalea belles. The beautiful dresses would make so many people smile and they loved taking photos. Hopefully one day, the Azalea Belles will return.
