Inspired by his cultural upbringing as a native Hawaiian hula practitioner, self-taught designer Manaola Yap translates Hawaiian spirituality and Hawaii's natural beauty into prints that embody repetitious patterns found in nature. Yap hand carves his designs onto bamboo laths, a traditional Hawaiian stamping technique known as 'ohe kāpala. In Hawaiian thought, these repetitious patterns in nature create symmetry, which Manaola refers to as sacred geometry. Through the creation of his unique Hawaiian prints, Yap strives to honor the wearers inherent spiritual essence, or mana. Yap thoughtfully transfers his own mana into designs intended to cultivate, sustain and protect positive spiritual energy. In doing so, he honors his traditions through cultural innovation and contemporary Hawaiian fashion.
