My husband and I finally took time in our calendar to go on a pedestrian only night to see the famous Peacock Lane lights. They were pretty but nothing special stood out that we don't already see driving/walking through several other neighborhoods. I realize this is a tradition and a must do to live on Peacock Lane. Now I've seen it and I don't need to return.

Every year during Christmas this street decorates their houses with beautiful festive lights. It's usually open to the public from December 15-31st and will stop at 11pm. You can drive or walk, but I would recommend walking so the experience is longer and more eye catching. This year one of the houses had a llama that you could take pictures with! We went the first night it opened to the public and it was pedestrians only. There was many people there with their families, and others with friends. I would recommend this to family and friends. This free event is a good excuse to get out and spend time with loved ones.

As if from out of nowhere all of a sudden there is a street where there are the most darling gingerbread styled homes and all who live there enjoy displaying Christmas lights. (Urban myth, if you live there you have to put up lights...not true. If you live there you want to put up lights!) The entire block on both sides are covered in Christmas lights and all kinds of holiday themes. There is a stand that sells hot cocoa; however, there is no bathroom and parking can be a nightmare, especially on pedestrian night. Pedestrian night is only three nights at the beginning of the season and the rest of the time you can drive through, but turn your lights off for maximum enjoyment. Lots of families and dogs and watch out for uneven pavement either in the street or sidewalks, watch your step. TONS of photo opportunities!!! Keep in mind its a Portland tradition that we hope you adopt as your own, but I can see how some might say...is that it??? I think its very sweet and try to go every year! P.S. Sometimes there are carolers...Come on now, get in the holiday spirit

I simply had to post a review when the lovely Dutch person above gave Peacock Lane an average rating. It's nothing close to average. I live now in England but for all the years I was in the Pacific Northwest, Peacock Lane was THE way to begin the Christmas season. The lights, the friendships, the music...it's all fabulous. Little children look with amazement at the gorgeous decorations and it's a joy to live through them for this most magical season. I would recommend anyone visit Peacock Lane if at all possible. The reviewer from Amsterdam is correct about one thing: it definitely must be seen at night...but I'm certain the dedicated people who live on Peacock Lane are quite pleased about that! A really great tradition to add to family memories.
