This drive is about 6 miles long. You go very high up and get great views. I also saw a bunch a bison and some grouse. The drive itself is great.

We cross country skied the road in January 2025. The park service plows the parking lot, and you can start at either end of the road. They also groom the snow occasionally. We skied halfway out and then turned around and skied back. Great views of mountains and wildlife (dozens of bison, more than a dozen elk, some coyote). Moderately easy skiing. But be sure to maintain lots of distance from bison, elk, etc. Just one caution for anyone visiting the road in 2025: the park service is digging gravel along one portion of the road, so there is equipment parked there. It's an eyesore, but you get past it in just a few minutes of skiing. Otherwise, a very natural and scenic setting. Be prepared for cold, and carry the Ten Essentials.

This drive is in the park. It’s in between Mammoth and Tower. It is a dirt road and can be bumpy. It goes very high into the alpine forest. The views are stunning.

We're Montanans, and try to visit Yellowstone every year or two. The crowding and traffic in the summer can be irritating, so spending some time on this off the beaten track road was a welcome change. The road is unpaved, and at times a little bumpy. There are maybe 10 places where one can pull off and park. We did that several times, and just soaked up the quiet and the scenery. Some expansive views here and there. The road is six miles long. Assume that the drive will take at least 20 minutes ; better yet, spend at least half an hour or more to really enjoy the experience. Pull off in one of those established spots, get out your binoculars and scan the hills for wildlife. There are a few spots on the road where hairpin turns and steep slopes could make this road a little scary for folks not used to the mountains. But in reality, if you slow down and act responsibly, it's not at all dangerous.
