Folks, it truly pains me to leave a review like this. Especially, when it’s a family-owned business. But, that’s no excuse for poor upkeep, not holding the cleaning crew accountable and the lack of a reasonable level of accommodation….REGARDLESS OF THE PRICE. Upon entering the room and kicking our shoes off, it became immediately clear that the floors were dirty. The kind of dirty that forces you to wear shoes, whenever you weren’t in bed. The bed spread had burn holes throughout. The shower had an annoying drip, drip, drip leak that would not stop and the shutters on the windows (note, our unit was on and facing Coast Hwy) would not properly close. So, for those passersby on Saturday night, you’re welcome. We presented our concerns to the front desk. They were very apologetic and were going to schedule a “Full Service” cleaning for that day. We also asked for two additional towels as there were two of us and literally only two towels in the entire room. No wash cloths, no floormat. That was it. We were instructed to go find one of the cleaning staff and ask them for more towels….I see. So, it’s my job??? Off to the beach we went for the entire day. When we got back to the room, NOTHING had been done. Correction, two new towels were left to replace the ones we used previously, nothing additional. The bed was not made. Nothing in the bathroom appeared to have been cleaned and the floor hadn’t been touched. AGAIN, we brought this to their attention. 5 minutes later, the young lady working the front desk (NOT a member of the cleaning crew) shows up with a broom to sweep (not mop) the floors. While she was very pleasant and apologetic, that doesn’t change the fact that the job didn’t get done right the first (or second) time. Their excuse was, there is a “language barrier” between the owners and the cleaning staff. I’m not making this up. Well, you hired them! Then, realizing that only one roll of toilet paper was left in the room, I made another trip to the front desk asking for an additional roll. And AGAIN, I was told to find a member of the cleaning staff to ask for an additional roll. Why am I the one having to hunt this stuff down??? Now listen, my gal and I are not some bougie cosmopolitans that violently recoil at the sign of dust, a dirty remote control or a random skid mark in the toilet. But, staying ANYWHERE in Carlsbad during the summer isn’t cheap and places like these can charge what they do, because they can. And while this motel was certainly a “bargain” compared to many other places, there still oughta’ be a minimum level of cleanliness and staff responsibility. If they had advertised that basic amenities were in fact, “self-serve” and that for the most part you’re on your own, at least we would’ve been prepared and could’ve made our decision to stay there with that in mind. Not to mention, I guess expecting a room to be properly prepared for you guests is unreasonable. All this and I still haven’t mentioned the broken bed that I fell out of…..Yep, true story. At the end of the day, we had a great trip (despite the brutal sunburn). However, unless new owners come in and completely overhaul the place, we won’t be back.

Good experience just recently came for easter and it was amazing for the price. Very close to the beach just down the street. Room was pretty clean, AC works good with a mini fridge.

Don’t stay there. Thanks God, we stayed only one night. This hotel was terrible- the front desk persons were horrible & rude. The beds, towels, furnitures, were soooo dirty & run down. They spent money on painting & tried to renovate bathroom, but the bed sheets, the pillows, the furnitures were very dirty & looked like they have never cleaned them. The towels had yellow strains all over. I had to buy my own blanket. . It was not worth even $50 discount & I paid $92 a night. The management could have done a better job. I just don’t know how people could write better reviews.

I’m going to try to be as polite as I can in this review, but take my words seriously when I say RUN AWAY!!!! This place is absolutely DISGUSTING! Bed had various stains and burn holes. It was so hard it felt like it was just stacked plywood with bedding on it. There wasn’t a single thing in the room that wasn’t is disrepair. We walked in looked at the room, and walked right back into the office and gave our keys back and immediately booked somewhere else. Everything in the room top to bottom was dirty, stained, or broken. There wasn’t literally someone living in a van outside the room. I could go on and on. I’ll let my attached photo’s tell the rest of the story.

Do not stay at this motel. The front desk staff are rude, to start off with. We arrived 2 hours early, and my wife asked to use the restroom. She said no; pay a $40 early check-in fee or use the park across the street. When we did check in later, we were given a filthy room at the end of the property. Trash was strewn everywhere in the parking lot. The bed was old and creaked. The comforter was full of cigarette burns (when we mentioned this to a maintenance worker, he said we would be charged for it). Coke stains on the hole-pocked walls. No closet. No coffee maker. The TV wasn't working. We asked for it to be fixed. They said they would be there in a half hour. A maintenance worker came 2 hours later. He treated us like idiots. He briefly got the TV working, and then it stopped. By this time, I am on the phone with Hotels.com, telling them we are leaving and requesting a refund. He wanted to listen; we asked him to leave. My wife walked him to the door, but he put out his foot to block her from closing it. He was threatening and rude. Obviously, we did not get a refund, but there was no way we were staying. We felt threatened and unsafe, and there was no way we could sleep on the horrible mattress. Scandia Motel is a horrible place that charges far too much money. Service is terrible, and the rooms are even worse. DO NOT STAY HERE.
