I love art museums and make it a point to visit them in each city I travel to, big or small. My husband and I asked for a map, and were told they have done away with paper maps and encouraged us to download their app. Ugh. We toured the first floor of contemporary art, and while moving through the exhibit encountered unpleasant security/museum staff. They were not at all friendly and very uptight, watching us the entire time we were in the room. I felt eyes on me everywhere I moved. It made trying to enjoy the art very uncomfortable. The second floor was sparse, with nice works haphazardly displayed with only a few works per room. I know the paintings are frequently changed out for new ones, but it really felt as if we were in a temporary exhibit hall. My husband downloaded the app to make absolutely certain we had seen everything, because surely there had to be more. Nope! We had indeed managed to see everything they had to offer. We left about an hour later, wondering if we had just spent some time in the twilight zone & very irritated we paid $50 for such a disappointing experience. If small museums are you jam or if you are tight on time & want to see art on the run, this is right up your alley. If you prefer large museums with thousands of works & curated collections, you will be VERY sad here. St, Louis, Indianapolis, Richmond, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati are all much smaller cities with vastly superior museums, most of which are free. It is a shame this is what San Diego has to offer.

The museum looks bigger on the outside. The architecture is beautiful. The museum does have a good collection of artwork from 3000 BC to present. There are great Renaissance paintings as well as contemporary. We did take our time and spent 2 hours exploring.

Stupidly I booked 2 tickets for us to visit on a Wednesday not spotting the fact that the museum is actually closed on this day. We then revisited the following day to discover that it was when entry is free (not sure if this is just one day in the month) Anyway we entered and one of the staff located the booking and refunded my card without question. Much appreciated. The collection itself is eclectic and well considered with some outstanding works. It also has a superb gift shop. We purchased an excellent colour guide book which was very fairly priced (usually the kind of item that comes with an exorbitant cost.) Thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

Lovely museum! Worth the trip. The park is beautiful, the nearby lunch at Panama 66 was very good. We also enjoyed the cactus and rose gardents.

I try to visit ART ALIVE every year at the MUSEUM OF ART in San Diego. It is held in the Spring, and it was April 25-27 this year 2025.I believe it was approximately 100 floral entries from professional and amateur floral designers. Floral designs are meant to complement existing art on exhibit at the Museum.I go to be amazed by the creative floral designs, and to support my friends from the Point Loma Garden Club. This year, there were 4 members that entered a design. The ROTUNDA had an amazing swinging, spiraling and moving floral design that was suspended from the ceiling by Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz from San Francisco.
