tripadvisorYou will find this interesting outdoor sculpture in the University area north of downtown. It denotes an important part of the early European population of the region, the farmers and shepherds from the Basque region who settled here. You will still find a Basque restaurant downtown.
MoreThis is an important monument to the history of this area. Basque immigrants came to this area in significant numbers and herded sheep. There are still a couple of Basque old fashioned restaurants in town. History.
MoreSome of the first European settlers in this region were sheep farmers from the Basque region of Spain/France. That's why there are still old fashioned Basque restaurants around. This statue is a pleasant tribute to the past.
MoreCame to the area to hike and came across this great monument. What a great place to learn a little history.
MoreA large 22 feet tall sculpture depicting a Basque shepherd carrying a lamb over his shoulders under a full moon is the centerpiece of the National Monument to the Basque Sheepherder. The monument was created by Basque artist Nestor Basterretxea. In addition to the statue, the monument also has a wall of honor that has donor and memorial plaques that list the names of Western Basque sheepherders and their families. The monument was erected in 1989 on a small hill above Rancho San Rafael Park, and the easiest way to get here is to park at the Evans Canyon Trailhead at the northwest corner of the Reno Softball complex. The monument is about 200 yards west via an easy to walk dirt/gravel pathway. Fulgencio
