Wanamaker Building Building

Wanamaker, established in 1902, is amongst the pioneer departmental stores in the country. Understandably a part of the National Register for Historic Places, it still continues to be one of the most important landmarks in Philadelphia. Located in the busy neighborhood of Chinatown, the building features some of the most unique artworks which include the humongous bronze eagle by August Gaul and the Wanamaker Organ, the largest known Court Organ in the world.

Visiting this building was on our list to do when in this city. The reason was mainly the largest pipe organ in the world which according to the information I found, was in Macy's store. Unfortunately when we came to Philly Macy's was already closed and the organ was not on public viewing. But we went inside the building - which itself is amazing - and asked the guy at the reception if it's possible to see at least something when we are there. And we've been allowed to see the space where was Macy's store. The sculptor August Gaul's 2500-pound bronze Eagle which was created to represent Germany in St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, purchased by Wanamaker, became the symbol of the store and is still there. I read that Philadelphians said “meet me at the eagle” to rendezvous with friends. Beautiful decorated walls, columns, ceiling and floor are witnesses of artistry and care for customers. The receptionist told us that the company who owns the building wants to turn the higher floors into luxury residential space but they want to keep the organ and trying to find somebody who would like to continue occupying commercial space in the way like was Macy's. Finger cross they will find it.
