tripadvisorWe have been collecting New Mexican Zfolk art for 30 plus years and are always interested in what is available, Davis Mather Folk Art now called Good Folk and is a wonderful gallery. There is something for everyone there.
MoreFrom the art to the the owner, this gallery exceeds expectations every time. Davis is awesome to talk to, he loves what he does, knows everything about the artists he represents and treats everyone with kindness and respect (not always the case when it comes to gallerists/owners). Every time we visit Santa Fe we seek out this gallery and buy a piece of Joe Ortega’s art. The jack rabbits are our favorite. I would hate to see them disappear from this store since they seem to be getting scarce in their inventory. See the pic for our most recent purchases.
Morethis is a great folk art gallery to visit. it is very near the plaza and very small but fun! Great carved wood pieces and nice people! Has been in business for over thirty years in Santa Fe!
MoreGo no farther than Davis and Christine Mather. Their considerable expertise is built from collecting, working with folk artists and, in many respects participating in the development of this delightful artistic tradition from Oaxaca to Santa Fe. I had the distinct pleasure of joining them on one of the small personalized tours to Oaxaca they offer each year. Each day during the week long visit we traveled to the homes and studios of various artists participating in different mediums - wood carving, weaving, clay - for example. Not only do the Mathers know their art (besides their considerable experience Christine is an art historian) the artists know them and greet them with obvious pleasure. As guests of the Mathers we were quickly welcomed into homes and shops. The Mathers capitalized on our visits by helping us learn about each artist as well as their artistic traditions. And along the way we visited historic sites in and around Oaxaca City where we learned the stories of Oaxaca including from the Zapotec era and even earlier, to current times. We stayed at the gracious Casa Panchita in Oaxaca City. And of course the restaurants and food we enjoyed.... well, enough said. Visit the delightful Davis Mather Folk Art Gallery and get to know these wonderful people. And if you possibly can - let them take you to Oaxaca. It is an experience of a lifetime.
MoreMy first visit was an accident. I had lost the tail from a small purple Mexican wooden armadillo that I had purchased at the Smithsonian and asked if they possibly had extra tails. The wonderful guy opened a drawer with plastic bags full of wooden arms, legs, feet and TAILS. He found one that almost perfectly matched the size and color of what I needed. (When I took it home it worked perfectly and I repaired my pet.) We laughed, he gave it to me and I always stop there when I am in Santa Fe.
