tripadvisorAs an historian of sorts, one of the first things I did when I moved to downtown Chicago in the early 1970s was to visit the Prairie Avenue Historic District on the city's near South Side, in the South Loop neighborhood. I was fascinated by the mansions of Field, Kimball, Pullman, Sherman, Glessner, Palmer and Armour. I still am. One that still gets a lot of use is the Keith House at 1900 South Prairie Avenue. It was built in 1870-1871 for Elbridge Gerry Keith, a banker who was extremely active in civic affairs. He had six children, died at his home in 1905 and is buried in a large plot in Graceland Cemetery. The 10,660-square-foot mansion has seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, three fireplaces and apartments on the second and third floors. One of the last remaining survivors of the Gilded Age, it has three distinct rooms--art gallery, parlor and dining room. In 2021, the Keith house sold for $2.3 million. Today, it is open to visitors for guided tours by advanced tickets only on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tours last 60 minutes. It also is available for weddings, private parties and charity/fundraising events.
MoreAbsolutely! Absolutely great. The owner helped us before, during and after, she accommodated everyone being for us unpaid wedding coordinator:) we didn't hire. Love it. Would recommend for everyone who need wedding for 75. Area is beautiful, parking was provided - we decided to use this place before seeing few other venues we previously scheduled to visit. Thank you for unforgettable event.
MoreWhat a great venue for a dinner. Spectacular old victorian home from when this neighbor hood was known as the Gold Coast. Perfect setting at the end of a cul-de-sac (in the middle of a block. Lots of history and a great place for a gathering.
MoreThe Keith House, a distinct 1870s mansion, is in the heart of the renowned Prairie Avenue Historic District, 10 minutes from downtown Chicago and three blocks from McCormick Place, next to the beautiful Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens. it's not a very big mansion, but the outlook is quite special with special color tune, and also beautiful. Inside, there is a ballroom, also has a art gallery with some paintings displayed. Also has some old fashion ceiling.
