Located on the University of Nebraska campus, the elegantly beautiful building that houses this world-class Modern American Art museum is constructed of Italian travertine marble and is worth seeing in its own right. The interior of the 1963 building features a naturally lit, spacious and sparsely decorated central hall surrounded by the three wings where the art is displayed. The museum's permanent collection includes representative works by important American artists such as Hopper, O'Keefe, Rothko and Warhol, among others. Two galleries of temporary exhibits are changed monthly. The campus-wide sculpture garden also features important works by America's most prominent sculptors. Admission to the museum is free and there is a small gift shop selling cards, books and posters.

Reviews
tripadvisorWe stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. Only one gallery was open because a new exhibition was being installed. This was our first visit. We were very impressed with the works of art and the way the pieces were organized and displayed. Lovely way to spend a few hours.
MoreInteresting selection, not large, but interesting. Not all of the pieces will appeal, some were rather tasteless and barely explained. I suspect some would be appreciated more with better fleshed out sides and notes from the artist.
MoreThe building itself has a lot of square footage and an impressive lobby hall, but not so much space available for the art itself. The art is mostly designed 'to make you think' which is a good thing - but a lot of it is pushing the same POV - about what one can expect from a University campus. Mind you, some of it is amusing, appropriately sardonic and actually good as well. Some of it just pushes instead - perhaps you could just atone once and be done? Having said that, there's bound to be some pieces that move you, and for this it's certainly worth a stop. Open late Friday's so fits in nicely at the end of a day. Rotating exhibits, presently transitioning to something new - so you never know what you may find.
MoreIt's well worth a few minutes of your time to visit the Sheldon. It's not large, but the art is well curated. All the employees I interacted with were friendly and helpful.
MoreOpen, airy, quiet. The galleries are spacious, good information provided with exhibits. Nice variety of subjects presented.
