Penn Station Building

A modern marvel in its own right, Baltimore Penn Station is one of the busiest train stations in the United States. A 1911 construction, this beaux-arts style structure is now one of the most convenient and well-organized rail stations in the entire country. A fairly large space, this building can be considered a work of art due to its marvelous architectural designs of high ceilings with stained glass roofs, vintage pillars, and ample lighting. This station makes commuters' lives easier with cutting-edge technology, including multiple televisions displaying train routes and timings, automated ticket-vending machines, several payphones, and a steady internet connection throughout the building.

Got on train 82 from Penn station to New York. It was my husband and I’s first time riding the train and we were feeling lost. Tara, the conductor, was extremely helpful showing us where to go. She was kind and assisted all passengers to the best of her ability. Definitely made our first train ride much smoother and we’re both very grateful!

We took a trip over to Baltimore Penn Station in order to take the Acela train for a day trip to Washington D.C. We were impressed with having the opportunity to take a 45 minute train ride from Maryland to Washington. This sort of travel just doesn’t happen in New Orleans so we definitely appreciated this journey. Baltimore Penn is an old historic station. I loved the stained glass windows in the ceiling and the old wooden benches. We had a minimal wait before with boarded the Acela and off we were to Washington. We definitely had a nice day trip.

It is a handsome train station from another era when there were a lot of trains. There is still a reasonable amount of traffic to East Coast cities here and especially to DC. There are some travelers facilities here.

Baltimore Penn Station is a clean and functional spot for catching trains and a convenient option if you’re looking to save on ticket costs. We found that tickets from this station were cheaper than buying from the BWI Amtrak location, and driving from our home took about the same amount of time, making it a practical choice. The station itself is tidy and well-maintained, but amenities are limited. There aren’t many options for food, snacks, or drinks, and seating is sparse, which can be challenging if you have a long wait. During our visit in December, it was 23°F outside, and the indoor spaces offered limited warmth, so dress accordingly.Parking is available nearby but comes at a premium—our stay from Monday 8 AM to Tuesday 9 PM cost $47. While pricey, it is convenient for travelers who want easy access to the station.Overall, Baltimore Penn Station is reliable and convenient for catching Amtrak trains, particularly if you’re looking for cheaper tickets and a station that’s easy to navigate. However, don’t plan to linger for food or comfort, and be prepared for limited seating and colder conditions in the winter.

PROS* This is a regular medium sized train station* It seems that it has not been updated nor renovated since my visits in the 1960s and 1970s* It has vintage wooden slated benches and a shoe shine stand* It is now once again a stop of the Baltimore Light Rail* It services Amtrak and the local MARC trains* It has a vintage old style classic ticker board of arrivals and departures* It has an amazing glass ceiling * Redcap guys waiting at the information desk* Car passenger drop off and pick up are directly at the entrance/exit doors* There is unchecked access to the departure platformsCONS* As stated- it is clearly not new nor renovated* Large waiting area not so user-friendly* Not necessarily within walking distance of anything of interestI VISITED THIS PLACE...... because I used Amtrak round trip from Moynihan Train Hall in New York to Baltimore. The lobby and waiting area are old and boring and unfriendly. I watched and reviewed the arrival and departure boards and and went to the platform when our train arrived - late. I marveled at the shoe shine stand from the 1960sWAS IT WORTH THE COST?It is free to be there but the train costsWOULD I VISIR THIS PLACE AGAIN?Again- only if I have a train to or from thereADVICE from IVTP* It is the Amtrak and MARC train station of Baltimore, so if you are arriving or departing, that is where you will need to be* If not, then visit only to see an extant 1960s era train station
