tripadvisorWe took the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Whittier to catch our Princess cruise. The ride was good, however, the seats were a bit uncomfortable and small. There isn't much storage room for carryons. I would recommend checking your bags if possible. There was a little room in between seat backs big enough for a backpack or purse or bag. We were in the upper deck sitting at a 4 seat cafe type seat. Did not see much in wildlife until we were by the water. Some birds, eagles etc. But, too far away for pictures. The train let us off right in front of the ship and our luggage was transferred for us.
MoreThe train ride was lovely but the food isn't very good anymore.
MoreThe Anchorage train depot is much smaller than I expected, especially since I live in Fairbanks and ride the train from there. The Fairbanks depot is so much larger and far more accommodating than Anchorage, especially in terms of instructions over the speaker system, better bathrooms, and more seating .
MoreGreat way to travel in alaska. The route from Anchorage to Seward has spectacular views of the flora and mountains. The route north to Danali also has great views and we saw moose and eagles on the way. They will check your bags directly to your ship if going on a cruise. Summer baggage check is in a white tent to the right of the depot.Baggage claim is a bit primitive; bags are taken from plastic bins and set out for you to find your own!
MoreWe took the train's 12:30 pm Gold Star Service (their glass dome car) from Denali to Anchorage which included lunch and dinner. The train left on time and the scenery was amazing. Our experience quickly went downhill from there. The train slowed to 8 mph for a prolonged stretch with no explanation provided. The food was mediocre at best. We pulled over on sidings several times and sat waiting for other trains to pass or crew changes. We finally arrived in Anchorage almost three hours late. Then we sat for a prolonged period waiting to unload with no explanation offered. When we were finally allowed to exit the train baggage claim was slow and chaotic. We didn't make it to our Anchorage hotel until after midnight.Alaska is an amazing place but Alaska Railroad was definitely the lowlight of our two week trip.
