The Morgan Library - original library entrance
Morgan Library Library ·$$

The building housing the Morgan Library & Museum and research facility was constructed by J.P. Morgan Sr., who was one of the richest men in the country. It opened to the public in 1924. A national landmark, the exhibition room showcases rare manuscripts and books - a grand variety of works by musicians, writers, artists and more, including Bach, Hemingway and Rembrandt. Differing programs are offered year round, plus there’s a small cafe, garden court, dining room and extensive gift shop.

Magical place to visit when you have an hour or two. Loved exploring the Library and hearing all about it's history.

What it could be or should be are far from what it is.Disinterested staff, illogical setup and the only reason to go is to see Morgan’s home, but only glimpses of it are available.Clearly, the original intent was to preserve a unique still existing home of a titan of industry. Somewhere along the way, that got lost. The library is a look into his past but there are so many objects with no attribution to Morgan or anyone else. Why are they there and what is the goal of the institution? To visit most of the displays requires significant stair climbing. There are 2 elevators, one was out of order and the other worked sporadically. We had to exit the elevator when it would not move. I have walked by for 30 years and finally made the visit. It was much better in my mind than in person. My suggestion is to avoid as it is rather expensive to enter with very little in return. My final suggestion is to the Board overseeing the institution. Clarify the intent of the institution and follow that thread. The original home should be the museum not staff offices. The distinctive history of JP Morgan and the daily life of a man who continues to resonate today is unique yet watered down and lost in translation.

Went to The Morgan with a friend who had to see the Tarot Card exhibition. I enjoyed the artwork and learning a bit about the history of the tarot cards. Friend also enjoyed it and was thrilled to have so many different decks of cards yo choose from in the museum shop. The library rooms were beautiful; amazing architecture. There was an original unsigned copy of Declaration of Independence in the rotunda. (I believe that this is also a temporary exhibit). Among the many old books, they had a Guttenberg Bible, and some books dating back well over 1000 years.Having read the book The Personal Librarian it gave me another perspective on the library. There was just a little bit on Belle da Costa Greene, and I would’ve liked to learn more about her.

The Morgan Library is the original immersive experience and with no technology required. Standing in its magnificent, book-lined rooms, you feel as though you are in the midst of the past, present and future all at once. Absolutely sublime.

Easy museum to tour as you are basically looking at two large rooms (library and study), plus the librarian’s office, and then two galleries that have special exhibits. Shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. However, for any book or library lover, the library is not to be missed. Displayed around the library are rare books and the setting is beautiful. Meanwhile, the librarian’s office contains more bolds, rare seals, cuneiform tablets, and jewelry from 2000 BC through 800 AD.Would go when there is a special exhibit that interests you. While we were there was an exhibit on renaissance tarot cards. I learned a lot about Tarot and they had the oldest tarot card deck on display. Was a little pricey at $25/person but I believe it is free on Friday nights. About a ten minute walk south from Grand Central Terminal
