The Benson Bubblers are iconic bronze drinking fountains, named after Portland’s businessman and philanthropist Simon Benson. He donated money to purchase and install 20 fountains around downtown. It is believed that there are two reasons for this: One is because he wanted people to drink more water instead of alcohol at lunchtime. Second, it is believed that he had seen a little girl crying at an Independence Day Parade because she was not able to find water. Urban legend has it that this affected him greatly, and he decided to make water available to everybody in public places.Today, there are 52 of these fountains throughout downtown. All combined, they are said to pour out close to 100,000 gallons of water per day.We are so glad that we got to see one of these and learned their history-- because of the City Tour that we took.

Chances are you'll see one of these if you walk around downtown. They're interesting to look at, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see them.

I absolutely love these things! I first saw them back in 1993 when I saw the movie Drugstore Cowboy. Four years later when I came to Portland for the first time I got to see them in person. I've always thought they were so cool. I have to admit that on this last visit I was a little timid about using them due to Covid, but I know they're clean and safe or the city would have turned them off as a precaution.

Found it in front of the Historical Society Museum. They really are cute and read up on them before you get here.
