Being a resident of Mason, I have to say this is the only place I would say you are required to go to. The history is amazing! Not to mention the design of the building, one of the best courthouses you’ll ever see! Don’t forget to explore the area around it, there’s a cannon model near the entrance with some interesting history. Unfortunately, going inside is usually restricted due to trials and work going on with city officials. Probably enjoyable for up to an hour before it’s time to go see other wonders of Mason.

Mason is a historic city, and the county seat of Ingham County. The square in this town is very pleasant, and features a beautiful county courthouse. There is more history here, though, and worth noting. Few people seem to realize that Mason is the boyhood town of Malcom Little, who became famous after he changed his name to Malcom X. (I didn't know until I read the Autobiography book, which of course was largely written by Alex Haley. People debate whether it is primarily Haley's account of his life, or Malcolm's.) There is a Michigan State University project online where you can learn more about places in Lansing and Mason where Malcom X went to school or worked.

The Ingham County Courthouse is not only a beautiful Architectural building it s also historic. A State of Michigan Historical Marker gives a little of its history and who it is named after. Worth stopping to see and study.
