tripadvisorHave been coming here for years, and often it is the only reason to swing into Kingsburg. While the town celebrates its Swedish heritage, other than a couple of restaurants, this store is the ONLY taste of Swedish goodies in town! The owner, June Olsson Hess, has been in this business for about 30 years, and it is a resource of Swedish items, history and arts. The are way too many items to list here, and truly, if you take your time to see all the items offered, you will need a couple of hours, The store is not large, but it is packed with items. And that means items seemingly on items, requiring peeks into shelving and cabinets and looking through books, linens and so forth. Just some of the types of items available include: fine linens for tables and decor; books and cards and artworks; food (chocolate from Denmark, preserves and crackers and seasonings from Sweden) and foodstuff items for cooking; clothing and household decor; fine jewelry and crystal and handmade items and folklore; misc magnets, nick-knacks, key-chains, just soooooo much - and, of course, Dala horses - and roosters!; and much, MUCH more ! We've never gone away empty-handed, and much of shopping for birthdays and Christmas happens right here. A definite place to visit if you have any interest in items Swedish, and they have a small offering of other Scandinavian countries as well. Well worth taking a detour - only a couple of minutes off Hwy 99, and while in town also try the Dala restaurant or Diane's bakery and cafe - a perfect Swedish afternoon!
MoreI made friends with the owner, her family, and friends a year ago. I can’t imagine a trip to California without stopping in. Absolutely everything Swedish you could ever want.
MoreSvensk Butik is a hidden gem on Hwy 99 in California's Central Valley, about halfway between Orange County and Sequoia National Park. The friendly shopkeeper, June, wears a cultural costume and stocks mostly Scandinavian specialties: Christmas décor, books, linens, candles, kitchen wares, music, local honey, and other bee products. (Ask about Viking Smoked Salt.) Ask for help if you can't find something in particular as this is a tiny shop carrying a plethora of items that may not be easy for a first time visitor to locate. June can also answer your questions about Kingsburg and the local area, or Scandinavian culture. Svensk Butik is a beautiful piece of Old World cultural history. Stepping inside is like going back to a time when the pace of life was slower and when people took the time to be neighborly and connect with one another. I love this place!.
MoreThe store sells lots of items from Sweden and likely can find anything there that one is looking for. They are not keeping to masking and social distancing and have a petition at the door stating such. The shopkeeper laughed at me and my mask.
MoreIf you are ever on a journey that takes you through Kingsburg and you are not sure where to go, then I highly suggest that you visit the Svensk Butik. Yes, it is crammed full of items to buy and share with others. The local honey is worth a try. It is raw and unfiltered. The shopkeeper, perhaps the owner, was sitting out front at a little table and she was pleasant to speak with.
