Audium Music Venue

Since 1965, Audium, a theater of sound-sculpted space has given concerts to be found nowhere else in the world. Performances take place in specially designed room in which 169 speakers have been built into the walls, ceilingand floor. The audience members sit in total darkness as compositions blending music and natural sounds, such as the gurgling of a stream, swirl around, above and below them. The effect is eerie, dreamlike and unforgettable.

Was hoping for something better. With 176 speakers, this could have been mind blowing but, alas, no. A random selection of disjointed sounds and crap music coming at you from various angles doesn't even merit the noun perfomance. And at $30 a ticket, I came away feeling right royally ripped off.

This missed the mark for me entirely. My partner and a couple of friends went in expecting a musical sound experience in the dark and left as quickly as possible during the intermission. So here's my warning: This is not music. These are nonsensical sounds without a story behind them, I tried my hardest during however long it took before we could get out to *get* what was happening. I tried meditating, letting the sounds wash over me, listening intently to predict what was next, etc. And I've got nothing. You'll hear: plates breaking, a car engine, a bird singing, water dripping, children counting in chorus. The sounds came from all sides of the room, which just made me sad to imagine all that could've been done with that space had it used proper music. But that is all that it had going for it. Go at your own risk. Or, like another reviewer said, make sure to consume whatever you need first to ensure your mind will be very open to this kind of nonsense.

The lobby in which you await the theater's opening gives a preview to the evening's performance. Mechanically-derived sounds and visuals while you mingle with your fellow audience members. The theater itself is planetarium-like with its domed ceiling, but totally pocked with speakers. The lights go out to complete darkness and the presentation begins. Each set is fifteen or so minutes, followed by the chance to stretch and take in more in the lobby. Three sets during which your only sensory input is audio. Audium is completely unique in my experience.

I am glad I went to actually get the experience. Overall, I thought it would be a « more organized » audio recording if I may say. It is more experimental then I had imagined. Maybe I am just not the audience for it.

Audium is an experiment in sound sculpting. A variety of sound pumped through 176 speakers in a darkened room should provide an introduction. Be prepared to let your mind wonder and enjoy sound(s) that make you think about your place in this world. From urban overload to organic nature and most everything in between, Audium touches a plethora of sound bases for one hour. This is NOT for children. Most attendees are local. This sound experiment has been around SF since the 60's, evolving and keeping true to its original intent. Price is reasonable.
