Purchased in 1877 by the city Municipality, this 11.9 acres of land came to be known as Alta Plaza Park and was re-designed and developed under the supervision of John McLaren. It was re-modeled from a rock quarry with green grass covering its gouged hillsides, to lush lawns, slopes and terraces. The Park is blessed with a breathtaking view of both the city and the San Francisco bay. People walking their dogs, family picnics, children in the playground are common sights here.

tripadvisorThis is a pretty park in a swank neighborhood. Because of its altitude, it is a good place to get some views of various parts of the city. Lots of people out walking their dogs.
MoreA beautiful space with amazing views, a spot where locals play tennis and exercise their dogs. But the park has a Hollywood connection. The grand staircase was used in the film What's Up, Doc? and the damage done by four vehicles driving down the steps is still visible in 2022. It also appeared in the Coppola film The Conversation. The architecture of the area is wonderful, none more impressive as the Alta Plaza Apartment Co-op that borders the park. Built in a long ago era, when buildings towered upwards, it's a remarkable example of the opulence of the 20's. The building was designed by local architect Conrad A. Meussdorffer, and is an absolute jaw dropping gem.Nearby, the hill drops down into the Marina, quite an experience for new riders to the 22 Filmore bus, who don't realize the bus turns away from the steep incline. Just.
MoreA beautiful park with great views and restaurants a few blocks away. We've been here a number of times as it's where 20+ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owners get all of our dogs together for a couple hours for play dates. We love seeing the children in the playground and people picnicking on the lawn.
MoreThis is one of San Francisco's beautiful outdoor green spaces. Alta Park is a combination huge lawn area for laying out a blanket and picnicking, beautiful views of the city, and a playground for the kids. on a breezy day it can be a few degrees colder here than a few blocks away on Fillmore Street. while this park was most likely designed for the locals, I recommend it as a stop on a cross San Francisco hike for tourists and locals alike. And if you've got a dog bring him.
MoreAlta Plaza was my neighborhood park when growing up in San Francisco. I played many games of tennis, walked my dog and met with neighbors. This park is still a good place to take kids, have a picnic, or just enjoy the park and city views.
