A debate rages over the origin of the fortune cookie. Some believe it was invented in Los Angeles, others believe it was in San Francisco. No one believes it came from China. This place has a partisan attitude towards the whole thing. The Hakone Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park where the cookies made their debut, serves its Shangri-La brand. It also sells retail from its Chinatown store, where you can see how fortune cookies are made. The process has not changed much since the early part of the century.

Authentic fortune cookies in fun shapes. We got a bag of “seconds” and had fun going through the fortunes and munching on the cookies while walking around Chinatown

We’ve been taking our daughters here since they were kids. They loved to watch the fortune cookie maker in action and enjoy smelling the freshly made cookies. To this day they still want to stop by and get a bag or two of their fortune cookies. They were fresh and crunchy and also flavored with chocolate or strawberry. They do offer other bakery items but by far the fortune and cow ear cookies were the most popular.Staff was friendly and in the last visit before COVID-19 even let us get close to the machine while in operation. I wish I could find my videos from the last visit to show the process through the folding. Remember to bring cash and for those bargain hunters the “reject” fortune cookies are just as good as the “perfect” ones. A bag of rejects was around $2.50 and will get gobbled up quickly.

My girls watch fortune cookies being made on Mr Rogers Neighborhood, and I thought it would be fun to see them made here. This bakery has a website advertising that fortune cookies can be seen being made on site. I called, but no answer. I emailed, but no answer. We decided to show up on a random afternoon anyway. The gentleman behind the counter let us know the cookies were not being made that day. We bought some products anyway. They were really delicious, but unfortunately, that's not why we made a special stop in this end of the city.

The fresh fortune cookies are great. Even greater is the option for those with a few days between order and pickup, or who are happy to have them sent - custom fortunes in the cookies. I wanted Today's wedding of Lee and Rob is a truly auspicious occasion. Could anything be more wonderful?

This must visit bakery on the heart of Chinatown offers a wide selection of fortune cookies, almond cookies and other treats. Prices are extremely reasonable. The fortune cookies are amazing - we ate a whole bag in a few days (and we're paying for it now!). Be sure to stop in and bring back goodies for friends and family back home. We did!!
