We were walking west down Pratt as opposed to the usual driving east and were amazed to see the Billy Holiday murals on Durham Street. Although she lived in several locations in the city, we were happy to learn that one was right in this Upper Fells Point area. One mural was a large painting. Another was a mosaic made of glass and china. The small alleys in this section of town have many hidden artworks and murals including one right nearby overlooking a community garden. History comes alive in Baltimore if one parks the car and takes a walk.

We took a wonderful tour of the Upper Fells Point neighborhood with a focus on Frederick Douglas. But in passing, this alleyway was pointed out to us. The alley way is a few blocks long on the 200 block of South Durham Street. Billie Holiday lived here in her early childhood and performed at some of the nearby (now defunct) clubs. These murals are a tribute to Lady Day and if you are a fan (as I am) taking a stroll and discovering the numerous large and small scale murals along this quiet street is a fun and worthwhile experience. Some of the murals are the size of buildings, others are quieter and painted on window screens as you progress up the street. Take your time and look closely to honor this incredible jazz singer.
