If you like to fish or if you are a photographer and want pelican photos, this is a good spot... not much else. If you risk going on land, watch out for the giant nutria.

Once highly criticized by environmentalists this place is now a shore bird rookery and nesting place for the once threatened brown pelican. This island was formed by dredge spoil and has become a place to ride around by boat, Fishing is good in the areas around it too.

Took a boat trip with Capt. Tommy Rachel to see the man made island which sits approximately 2 1/2 miles from the shoreline to the west, 10 miles south of the mouth of the Mobile River & 12 miles south of Mobile. The island is off limits so you are not allowed to land but as you cruise along the shore you can see thousands of birds, mostly pelicans. As the island is their nesting grounds, you will see birds of all sizes, shapes & colors. Pelicans from small white young babies, larger grey ones to the full grown brown & red ones. The birds move all around & you can take pictures of many in groups, floating or flying around. There are at least 15 different species of birds documented to inhabit the island.
