Clad in a red hazmat suit with rubber boots and mask, this horse constructed with fiberglass is a memorial dedicated to the people and place of Rocky Flats near Denver, Colorado. During the Cold War, nuclear weapons production took place at the Rocky Flats Plant. This model was created and installed by artist Jeff Gipe, whose father had worked at the plant for over 20 years. Years of radioactive contamination due to daily operation, pad drum leakage and the fires in 1957 and 1969, led to contamination of the area in and around the plant which in turn led to protests and shutdown of the plant. The Cold War Horse serves as a memorial as well as a warning to the people of the harmful effects of the War.
