White Horse Bar Bar & Pub ·$

This is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) gay bars in California. It was a Chinese restaurant in the 1950s and 60s that would close the kitchen and open up the dining room to gay men and lesbians. Nowadays, the egg rolls and mu shu are gone in favor of a neighborhood bar with a friendly, low-key atmosphere, where people come for good conversation and to make a new friend or three. The crowd is a mix of gays and lesbians (although the men sometimes outnumber the women on weekends), comprised of both locals and some college students. Weekends feature a small dance space with hip hop, house and electronica music.

An important community and historic and entertainment institution, the gay bar that has been around for decades and is still going strong. At the border of Berkeley and Oakland, it attracts a broad mix of patrons. You can get a good drink here and you can hang out with your friends. Lots of laughs.

It may be the longest continuous operating gay bar in the world, but anyway, it has been here as long as I have been out, and I am very old. We came here to celebrate Pride and enjoyed some cocktails served up with charm by a pretty bar tendress. Lots of friendly people here. It's a simple neighborhood bar that welcomes everyone. An institution.

I was looking for dance place and found this place. They have a website, which provided plenty of information. I was happy to see that they had extended Happy Hours on Friday night to 10:00pm, which was buy one cocktail and second was $1.00, wow! It also shows a $5.00 cover charge starts at 9:00pm. So I decided to give a visit, unfortunately, I could get there before 9:00am. I arrived at 9:45pm. It is located at the corner of Telegraph and 66th Street. From outside it looks like an old place, but inside it had all modern conveniences; flat screen TVs, interacted game tablets, long bar, water cooler, smoking room with a pool table and other pool table in a smoke free zone. At the bar, there was a monitor, scrolling daily specials of the week, which included Friday Night’s happy hour end at 10:00pm. I immediately order a drink, with expectation of second drink being $1.00, but NO! Happy hour ended at 9:00pm. Wait a second, Mr. Bartender! I told him about web site and monitor, directly behind him, that it ends at 10pm. Mr. Bartender said it ends at 9:00; we haven’t changed the sign or web site (I will discuss this later). The place looked busy with older patrons, but I kept looking around but could not see dance area. I walk around the corner and found another bar with nice size, dance floor. There were plenty of places to sit; bar high tables and chairs, regular table and chair, two tier bench seating, plus stools at the bar. In addition, there was a good size stage to dance on, but the dance floor it was a bit annoying. About ¾ of the floor was sloping downward in one direction, which felt weird to dance on. The dancing picked up at about 10:15 and became crowded by 11:30. There was wide variety of music type from top 40, hip-hop, dance, and oldies (Katy Perry’s TGIF) A majority of dance crowd was college women; they all appear to feel safe and confident being there. By 12:30, the crowd thins out. I didn’t feel any attitude during the night, but welcomed.
