This is a surprisingly large lake with a large grassy green area near the lake where people picnic or just relax. It is also a great place to go for a walk or a run.

The joke goes like this: In order to compete with the San Francisco Scenic 49 Mile Drive, Oakland created its own 49 mile scenic drive. It goes around Lake Merritt 49 times. Jokes aside, this lake is a city jewel and we all love to walk or jog around it. Lots of lovely views from all sides and places to have a party or picnic. Fashionable residential areas always.

Lake Merritt and its adjacent park form a nice oasis in the middle of Oakland. There are lovely views of the skyline and it's near several attractions. Some of the areas of the park, like the bandstand, are a bit worn down and could use some love, but overall, it's a nice place to take a stroll.

While staying at a lovely Airbnb in the area, I went for a morning walk around lake Merritt. Sadly, the Canadian Geese have made the trail around into a poop-infested minefield. The lake itself is, I believe, a former bog...and smells like it if the breeze is coming your way. Many people taking a pleasant stroll, and I got my morning steps in. But not an ideal place for a walk (especially with kids.)

It’s a beautiful and long standing lake. Unfortunately lots of garbage everywhere and it needs a facelift to bring it back to a good standard.
