Algonkian is our go to park, be it for relaxing, leisure walks along the banks of Potomac, picnic with the entire family, bird watching, boat race watching even on the Maryland bank, the river breeze, golden sunset, photography, and what not. List is long. The entrance is free in contrast to nearby national and county parks on the same river bank. Whole bunch of families frequent here to enjoy the day and the kids play. There are not very many benches, and the park can really get crowded on a warm afternoon. In treed areas, we have noticed bugs and mosquitoes. Nevertheless, Algonkian Park is a highly valuable addition to Loudoun county, which opens its arms without asking to take out your wallet at the gate. Highly recommended.

6/10/25 - Do not enter the trail system north of the seasonal cabins for any reason. I was practically eaten alive by mosquitoes in there yesterday on a solo hike. I used a bandana to cover my neck and ears, and even with a Deep Woods Off application, there was a fearsome amount of mosquitoes, not fun at all. FYI, I hiked the Barred Owl and Countryside Trails, on the way to Box Turtle Trail, but never made it - had to get out fast, was swarmed any time I stopped. I will be calling the elementary school that abuts these trails to inform the principal. The recent rain and quite moist conditions allowed millions of mosquitoes to hatch. It was a true horror show. I have informed the Park staff as well that a sign should be put up.

Great park. We mostly just used the playground, which our toddler loved, but the rest of the area (what we could see) looked really nice and well-maintained. The bathrooms (by the playground) were clean.

Looking for a pristine, finely manicured course with 5 attendants making sure you are greeted and your clubs are set to go on your cart? This is not the place for you. Looking for a public 18-hole course with no houses, mature trees, and seemingly “pet deer” on almost every hole, hawks, wood chucks, get yourself a tee time. Nothing tricky. Just plain old good LONG drives are the key and staying out of the bermuda “grabby a$$” grass rough. Fairways tightly mowed and greens are in great shape. Plenty of water recently and greens were slow. Sand traps were not raked and overgrown (only reason for mark down). Yes, I would still recommend this course and play it next time I’m in the area.
