This historic Victorian mansion is the last of its kind at Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland. Built in 1875, it was once the home of one of Oakland's wealthiest residents. The beautifully restored Italianate gives a good glimpse into Oakland's rich and colorful history. The house has a good, albeit small, collection of Victorian arts, crafts and furniture. Afterwards, take a walk around Lakeside Park or rent a paddle boat on Lake Merritt. Guided tours are available.

tripadvisor3.5 = good. As a historic hour to tour, it's pretty basic. Multipurpose building with offices for rent on the upper floors, but the first floor is a period recreation. Presumably if you're good with QR codes (I just never to seem to bother) there is additional information, but basically you wander through and imagine. There are people downstairs to give an introduction and answer questions, but they do not give tours. It's not busy however, and if you take the time, they will hold a conversation and impart some additional info. Missed opportunity to tell a larger story and they have space for a smaller historical museum but apparently all of that has been moved to the Oakland History Museum not far away (worth seeing in its own right) Easy enough parking around the lake on the Sunday I showed up - and for $5 it really can't be beat for an hour looking around. Really glad it's been preserved and I completely understand (if regret) that it has to pay its way on the upper stories. As noted elsewhere, it's also a venue, but I have no info on that.
MoreI love to walk around this classic house on my walks around the Lake. And I know that it is available for rentals for parties. The design is lovely and it will make your party memorable. Right near the library.
MoreWe went to Lake Merritt Area. There is a historic mansion there which is quite nice. It is two story and interesting to see. It is called the Camron-Stanfor House.
MoreThis is one of the last mansions on the Lake where there once were quite a few. Now this is a party center, a place that you can rent for your event. It's lovely and the site is special.
MoreWe came for the 3pm tour of Camron-Stanford House on Sunday, December 22 2019. There were also about 6-7 other people who came for the same tour. But no guides showed up, and the door of Cam'ron-Stanford House was simply closed. Calling their number gave us a prerecorded message that confirmed that they do offer tours at 3pm on Sundays, that they are open at their usual hours over holiday period and no reservation is needed for tours. People waited outside the House until 3:30pm and left. We left at 3:45pm. Still no guides, door shut, my voicemail not returned. What a shame! What an irresponsible approach to visitors!
