This is one of the smaller yet finer galleries of Santa Fe. Located in the rail yard area close to several other contemporary galleries. This gallery focuses on the fine art of Japanese bamboo baskets. Attention to detail is key here. We caught the show entitled “Three Generations of Wada Waichisai”. Who knew you could get bamboo to do the things he does. Beautiful workmanship. Check hours before going. There is pay for parking on the weekdays. Sunday’s parking is free but most of the galleries in the area are closed. .

the gallery has baskets of extraordinary quality that qre made in Japan. The baskets are one of a kind and made by master basket weavers. I would suggest looking online at what they have even if you cannot visit.

Last month I visited the TAI Gallery for the second time, having first seen an exhibition of bamboo baskets by one Japanese master there in 2011. Again, the esthetics of the works on display, this time by several artists, and the visual effects of form and execution were beyond belief. In some cases, the concept extends beyond that of a basket as generally understood to flights of fancy. I was told that one of the artist is 100 years old (or close to) and still active. In all instances, the workmanship is extraordinary and the prices, although high, are fully justified. Photos of many works may be seen on the TAI Gallery's website.

The artist displayed prominently at the front of the gallery didn't seem Japanese to me (although I'm no expert) -- for instance, her work included a row of coffins. Luckily, I found a few bamboo baskets toward the back of the gallery... just as the very helpful staff member spotted me and came over to talk. I didn't know that this gallery's specialty is Japan and that the owner travels there often to meet its best artists. The gallery was a revelation! The Japanese artists' baskets were more than innovative. I had no idea that bamboo could be sculpted, colored, and presented in such surprising and beautiful ways. I recommend stepping out of this (contemporary but still typically avant-garde) gallery row of Santa Fe... spend some time in this very different place.
