St. Bartholomew's Church Episcopal Church

Built in 1918, this large and beautiful Episcopal church is distinguished by its Byzantine architecture. The building was designed by Bertram Goodhue and contains a portal (moved from an earlier building) by Stanford White. Because it sits on some of the city's most valuable real estate, St. Bartholomew's struggled against developers for years, and finally became a test case for New York City's landmark preservation law. Today, it is home to a thriving congregation and sponsors many community outreach programs. The popular Cafe St. Bart's is run by the church.

I was stunned at the architectural beauty of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church on Park Avenue in NYC!On a recent visit, my daughter and I decided to go in. The mosaic ceilings, artwork, woodwork, and feeling of the entire church was so carefully mastered. It had a Byzantine feel, a wealth and elegance of days gone by. The mosaic ceiling is an absolute must-see for anyone who appreciates fine art. I will be back again to read the mosaics.

It was built in 1916–17 in Byzantine Revival design. When we entered we thought it's Orthodox church but it is not, it is part of the Evangelical movement in the Episcopal Church. It was surprise for us as we never saw any other church like this - till now. The illumination of the walls and ceiling made it magical. We spoke with young lady who did some work there who told us bit about the history of the church. You should really visit it.

St. Bartholomew’s Church, commonly called St. Bart’s is a beautifully designed house of worship and a major attraction worth visiting when traveling to New York.In November of 2018, I brought myself and my wife for a visit of St Bart’s, and we were both captivated by its Byzantine exterior design and its gorgeous stained glass windows. We also enjoyed viewing and taking pictures of the church’s altar and the depiction of the Last Supper, which is located in the baptismal chamber north of the altar.Designed by renowned architect by Bertram Goodhue, and the venerable architectural firm, Mckim Mead & White in the early 20th Century, , St. Bart’s has been featured in multiple films and television shows ranging from the 1981 & 2010 film version of Arthur, the 1995 movie, It Takes Two & the television series, Mad Men.Due to its famous and revered design and its important heritage, St. Bart’s is listed on the National Register Of Historic Places, and has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark & a NYC landmark. Both my wife and I highly recommend for everyone to visit this beautiful church when traveling to Manhattan, New York!!!
