This lighthouse on Alcatraz Island can be spotted from a long distance. Close upfront it is impressive. Cannot go inside it but certainly worth looking at from up close.

If you're visiting this famous park, one of the 1st things you notice is the huge & very nice lighthouse high upon the rocks, unfortunately you cant go inside, only admire close up.

The first lighthouse on the West coast and a must see when on Alcatraz. To be honest you can't really miss it when on the island.

It is a grand sight from the city hills and particularly on appoach to the island and whilst touring same. Operating from 1854 it had the record of being the first lighthouse on the west coast. Damaged in the 1906 disaster it was replaced in 1909 by a higher tower. As with lighthouses all around the world, it has been automated. This occurring in 1963, the same year it closed as a penitentiary.
