Of all of Portland’s bridges, Tukey’s is its workhorse. Built in 1960, this toll-free, 8-lane, single-deck, 4-span, steel bridge crosses Portland’s Back Cove. It runs north to south from East Deering to East Bayside and Munjoy Hill, as earlier bridges have done since 1796. Its 96-foot (29.3 m) width also carries shared use paths for walkers and bicyclists. The bridge’s northern approach features three levels of overpasses. Off to the east, it passes the iconic Burnham and Morrill (1913) baked bean factory, a local historic landmark in East Deering. The popular and scenic, 3.6-mile (5.8 km) Back Cove Trail crosses under the bridge’s southern side. Aside from anywhere along Baxter Boulevard, the Loring Memorial on the western tip of Eastern Promenade offers a good vantage point for viewing the bridge. The shared use paths on and under the bridge are great places to catch sunsets over Back Cove and sunrises over Casco Bay. While the engineering design isn’t quite so inspiring as the Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge (2003) in Boston or the Penobscot Narrows Bridge (2006) in Prospect, it’s an admirable structure all the same.
