Reviews
tripadvisorI want to explicitly state that the front desk staff and the hard-working housekeeping ladies at Hotel De Anza are absolutely wonderful, polite, and professional. They do a fantastic job. Unfortunately, the hostile, deceptive, and predatory behavior of upper management completely ruined what should have been a celebratory week for my 5th year volunteering at the CrossFit Games. I proactively booked a 1-Bedroom Suite with a kitchenette nine months in advance. Due to an internal system migration with IHG, the hotel completely deleted my reservation without my knowledge or consent, claiming it did not transfer over. When I discovered the error, the nightmare began. Furthermore, this property charges premium 4-star rates but completely failed to disclose on its website at the time of my booking that its restaurant and the Hedley Lounge were entirely shut down for renovations. While they have recently listed on the IHG site that their onsite amenities are closed, they did not state this on their original direct site before the transfer. They deliberately hid these massive disruptions to lock in my premium payment. There are zero open dining or morning lobby coffee. Two days before my arrival, Sales Manager Erika Llamas intentionally tampered with my active, corporate-approved reservations, attempting a predatory bait-and-switch to force an unauthorized $468.00 nightly charge onto my file. When I rejected this scheme, Front Office Manager Anthony Ahanotu called me on the phone and was aggressively condescending, rude, repeatedly cut me off, and threw me on hold mid-sentence. When I stood my ground and defended my contractually locked-in corporate rate, he gaslit me by calling me belligerent and issued a hostile take it or leave it ultimatum, knowing downtown San Jose was entirely sold out. I was left feeling deeply anxious and physically unsafe to even check into the building. Upon check-in, Mr. Ahanotu completely shifted his hostile demeanor to an overly nice persona to manipulate the situation. He walked us to our room, blamed IHG Corporate entirely for the errors, and explicitly stated to us that the hotel really is not attached to IHG. He bragged that he has 13 years of hospitality experience and was brought in from Chicago specifically to suppress and take care of the hotel's massive wave of negative guest reviews. To get us to drop the issue, he promised a written apology from Erika and a deposit of elite loyalty points. After we checked out, he flatly lied to his own General Manager and denied ever making this agreement. What he did not know is that my travel partner recorded the entire check-in exchange on a smartphone video. We have him caught red-handed on tape explicitly saying he would deposit the points.Instead of honoring his word, he tried to resolve an unauthorized $1,800+ billing manipulation by telling us we could have free drinks from the lobby refrigerator. A few bottles of water and Cokes do not absolve management of contract fraud and guest intimidation. A formal complaint, all email communication, and full check-in video recordings have been handed directly to the Office of the California Attorney General. AVOID THIS PROPERTY AT ALL COSTS. Management is actively engaging in deceptive practices, lying to their own leadership to cover their tracks.
MoreI love a nice historic hotel. Unfortunately, Hotel De Anza is not nice.Even more troubling, IHG is allowing this hotel to remain open despite conditions that fall far below any reasonable standard for one of its properties. This unbranded hotel in the IHG system is undergoing an exhaustive renovation with no realistic completion date in sight. In the meantime, IHG continues accepting reservations and charging guests to stay in what is effectively an unfinished construction project with deteriorated rooms, limited services and serious maintenance problems. There is no restaurant or bar. There is a coffee shop, but it doesn’t open until 7 a.m., leaving the hotel without a meaningful early-breakfast option. That is unacceptable for a downtown business hotel in a relatively large city.Valet parking ends at 11 p.m. and doesn’t resume until 7 a.m. If you arrive on a late-night flight or need to depart for an early-morning flight, you may have a major problem retrieving your car. Even more inexplicably, the front desk doesn’t have access to the valet key lockbox. Other hotels have figured out how to provide guests with after-hours access to their vehicles. Why haven’t Hotel De Anza and IHG?My room was extremely tired. The furniture was scuffed, scratched, damaged and visibly worn. The bathroom had extensive mold and mildew, while the floor of the walk-in shower was covered with hair from previous guests. In some areas, it appeared that new caulk had simply been applied over existing mold instead of the underlying problem being properly remediated. New caulk may conceal mold temporarily, but it doesn’t eliminate the moisture or contamination behind it. Some of the growth was dark or black in appearance. I obviously cannot determine without professional testing whether it was black mold, but any significant mold growth in a hotel bathroom should be treated as a serious health and sanitation concern — not covered up and ignored.Everything looked like the result of decades of cheap, cosmetic work — lipstick-on-a-pig renovations instead of proper maintenance and restoration.Worst of all, the HVAC system was nonfunctional. My room was 80 degrees (F). The air conditioning wouldn’t cool it. The maintenance employee tried his best but couldn’t lower the temperature. He told me this was a problem in most of the rooms. The outside temperature was 87 degrees (F). Expecting a guest to sleep in an 80-degree room is absurd. If IHG knows that the air conditioning doesn’t work properly in much of the hotel, why is it still selling those rooms? How does a hotel with mold, inadequate housekeeping, badly worn furniture, no restaurant or bar, restricted access to guests’ vehicles and widespread HVAC problems remain open under the IHG umbrella?IHG’s decision to keep Hotel De Anza operational reflects poorly on the entire company. Guests book through a major chain because its name is supposed to provide some assurance of basic standards, oversight and accountability. Those safeguards appear nonexistent here. IHG shouldn’t hide behind Hotel De Anza’s unbranded status while collecting reservations through its system and extending its loyalty program to the property. The valet attendant and front-desk employees were friendly, but they were young and didn’t seem particularly well-trained. My IHG elite status was recognized, but I wasn’t offered the required choice of elite benefits. Of course, a breakfast benefit wouldn’t have meant much since the hotel has no restaurant.Hotel De Anza should close, complete its renovations and reopen only when it can provide the accommodations and services expected of a legitimate 4-star hotel. Keeping it open in its present condition feels less like hospitality and more like asking paying guests to subsidize the renovation. This may eventually become a nice hotel, but that is likely at least a year away. Until then, avoid it. Downtown San Jose has better options, including the Marriott and two Hilton properties.IHG should be embarrassed to have its name associated with Hotel De Anza in its present condition.
MoreThe location for this hotel and the convenient location to the SAP center was all that was great. The website did not inform guests of the closed restaurant. The rooms were dirty with stains on the carpet and mildew and mold in the bathroom. We never were informed that room service was every other day (even then they never showed up). The digital/text valet did not work correctly. I would not stay here again.
More2-3 star hotel. Staff were nice. However, I prepaid for the room through Tripadvisor. We pre paid for three nights but checked out early to take a red eye back to Atlanta and avoid nation wide travel issues with the weather and TSA. Unfortunately the hotel charged us for 1-2 nights (I have no receipt, no communication, no idea why they charged me for a prepaid room). I have called and spoken with two people at the front desk since then over 3 days, both apologized there was no manager on site, both assured me the issue would be resolved asap, but still no credit for the incorrect charge, no communication. I rarely write any reviews, and almost never any negative reviews, but I have never had this happen with a hotel before, believe Tripadvisor should also know the hotel charged directly for a room already paid to Tripadvisor, and just want this resolved. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
MoreOkay so I did not stay at this hotel as a guest, but I photographed a wedding there last night and it was amazing. Tia (I hope I spelled her name right) and the entire staff were on fire. The hotel recently renovated their first floor lounge and bigger event room, and the results were spectacular. Little details like the lighting and tile work, fountains, the choices of color and decor were clearly made by someone at the top of their game. The catering was perfect, great food and a professional staff. Well done everyone!
