Sure, you could order online from Powell's City of Books, but you would miss seeing one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States. With over 1.5 million books in 3,500 different sections, this shop covers an entire city block and offers new, used, rare and out-of-print books. Many come to browse, get out of the rain, drink coffee in the cafe and pontificate. Authors read their works several evenings a week. This iconic store is a Portland must visit.

tripadvisorWe agreed everyone would meet back at a specific spot in an hour-2 hours later we had to leave die to another reservation.Never experienced anything of it kind, really cool- the place was very busy at 3pm-5pm on a Friday afternoon.
MorePortland's legendary block-long, four-story warehouse of books in every conceivable category can be daunting even for the most dedicated bibliophile. Always best to have a target genre or title in mind, but it can be equally rewarding getting lost in the stacks and making that unexpected discovery. The in-house cafe serves some pretty strong coffee, ideal for renewing one's energy for the search.
MoreThis place is unbelievable. I enjoyed walking through the stacks. They have everything you could imagine and it is well organized. A whole city block, 4 stories of books.
MoreSeveral people at my convention kept referencing this place. Some of my best friends are librarians. My cousin is a librarian. None of those supposed friends or purported relatives suggested this stop. To be fair, even I don’t know where I’ll be each week. But still…The convention participant recommender demographics included parents and young adults, and each said they had made a second trip during this stay. Apparently these attendees didn’t have official roles and were allowed to escape the pomp. Resentment of their freedom aside, the caged bird (me) was curious. Finally making my way there, I found the walk from the area with lots of lodging properties quite easy. The surrounding area has lots of other activities , shops , and eateries, so you really can make a day of it. I left and went to have lunch nearby. This is a world of books. Rare books. Cliche titles. Children’s books. Book related items. Book and literature themed bags and souvenirs. Lots to say, too many purchases made, but I’ll be back.
