tripadvisorThis mixed use trail gets mostly walkers through the downtown area of Marietta, then bike riders elsewhere. For visitors, it's an easy walk along the trail to/from downtown, Marietta Square and the nearby Confederate Cemetery and Gone With the Wind Museum -- but not in the heat and humidity of a Georgia summer. A plethora of coffee, ice cream and snack shops are located just off the trail Marietta Square. And the new Marietta Square Market and food hall expands that greatly. I did a full write-up for cyclists on my blog for those who want to check out the biking options away from downtown.
MoreWe love trails like this where there are stops along the way and history. The visitor's center in Marietta has restrooms and is a good place to start and get a map (or a bite to eat before or after you venture out.)
MoreAfter a disappointing visit to Kennesaw Mountain, we noticed signage along the road indicating the 16 mile long or so Mountain to River Trail. Picked up a guide at the Marietta visitor center and followed the portion that runs through Marietta to its recently constructed terminus at the confederate cemetery. The trail begins in the national battlefield park and follows trails and roads down into town. It then uses sidewalks and shoulders along Kennesaw Bld as it approaches Marietta where it is a paved path and runs behind shops through town to an overpass and the cemetery. Parking is available at the Kennesaw Mountain vistor center and in downtown Marietta. Take the time to follow at least a portion of the trail. One of the many highlights along the way is the Marietta Historical Museum, which is where the Andrew raiders met for the great locomotive chase (they stole the train The General just up line at Big Shanty). Jacob Parrot from Kenton, Ohio was one of the raiders and became the first recipient of the congressi0onal medal of honor. The building was also briefly Sherman's headquarters.
