Sandy Boulevard slices diagonally through Portland's east side. This section of Sandy, a popular shopping district and trendy neighborhood, forms the core of Northeast Portland. You will not find any stars on the sidewalks or any concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, but the neighborhood is full of stores and restaurants: A-Boy Electric, Just 4 Kids, Poor Richard's and the Hollywood Burger Bar, to name a few. This is another Portland area on the rise, and it shows. Credit card acceptance varies by establishment.

The place is not clean, many of the close are stained or just dirty. I walked in to the store with two other ladies. The sales clerk at the front desk to the right of the store stated if you have bags or a purse that is large enough to insert a piece of paper, 8.5 X 11, has to be checked in. I have a very expensive purse that was smaller than 8.5 X 11. So I was able to move on. I had been shopping for awhile and a young man approached me that I had not even seen before and said I needed to give him my purse because it had to be turned in. I said no I don't, I already had my purse checked up front. He accused me of not telling the truth.I said if you can fit a piece paper in your bag you have to check it in. My purse was clearly smaller, he reported it to another clerk and was told to drop it, however he didn't he followed me everywhere. I was up by the main desk and he accused me of not being truthful about checking my bag. I was was not happy at all and I was accused of being rude and aggressive. That set me off, I said I have not been rude so please stop saying that. I am angry that I have been accused of not telling the truth and followed around and embarrassed in front of other shoppers. Then the female clerk said we work for minimum wage and she's been punched and had a gun pointed at her. Which has nothing to do with anything. I told her I wasn't carrying a gun and I certainly wouldn't punch her. To suggest that having an expensive purse made me that bad person was absolutely uncalled for. I told them I work just as hard for the income I earn. The young man kept smiling as if the whole situation was a Joke. I told them both this isn't funny, everyone should be treated respectfully and the same when they walk into the store. I said if my purse had been an issue to begin with I would have gladly waited outside for my daughters. I assured them I will never shop in this store again. I didn't like being treated like a shoplifter in a used clothing store. They young man continued to point me out as I remained in the store and again was told to drop it. Very poor customer service. There is no way I would hand over my purse to some guy with no name tag who I had never seen before. The female clerk finally agreed it was a mistake, and that they were just trying to do their job. I say no, I was singled out for whatever reason and treated like crap and then they tried to spin it to be about their terrible job. So whoever owns this store take note, your employees hate their job and the people who shop in your store.

The Hollywood District got its name from The Hollywood Theater that was build back in 1926 as a movie Palace with its iconic Marquee and grand facade it is the center of this small District able to screen 70mm movies like the recently release film DUNKIRK. The Hollywood District has a stop on the MAX Light Rail Line. And has Sandy Boulevard running right through it making this district easy to get to via public transport. It features a few notable shops and restaurants such as Trader Joe's Market, Chin's Kitchen for Chinese take away, Blackwell's Grub Steak and Grill that has live music, Sam's Billiards, Columbia River Brewery, and the Mountain shop to name just a few. The building that the Mountain shop is located in at the corner of NE 37th and Sandy Boulevard is unique. It was a roadside attraction with a giant 7UP bottle on top of it with dazzling neon display of sparkling, shimmering bubbles.when I was a kid this building always was the focal point you gazed at when you drove by on the freeway. The building was original built in 1926 in the shape of a milk bottle that Housed a dairy. Then after that it modified to look like two cans of stacked paint. And then in the 1940's along came the Giant 7UP Bottle which stayed there well into the 1990's. When I was a kid, this was what made the Hollywood District special. Those amazing iconic buildings and their awesome jaw dropping splendor. (The 7UP bottle has since migrated to a rooftop over near the corner of NE 14th and Couch Street.) Now the major thing about the Hollywood District for me that makes it a must see destination has got to be The Hollywood Theater. That has been restored to its grand old iconic awesome majesty.

On the surface, the Hollywood district doesn't look like much besides the obvious: transit hub, Hollywood Theater, Whole Foods, 24 Hour fitness, but in the recent year, I've explored the district more thoroughly, and discovered a good many hidden gems ... cafes, restaurants and such. Also, as others have hinted at, there are wonderful neighborhoods and hills to walk in. I'd suggest a walk up to Fremont from Sandy, perhaps via one of the unique tiny roadways or stairways. To access this neighborhood, I use the countless Max lines that run quickly from downtown or the 77 or 75 line. Not an obvious hip or trendy yet ... so come check out old time Portland before it disappears.
