tripadvisorThis Puppet Museum is a one room puppet workshop that also furnishes a puppet collection for viewing. It has some great puppets on display from a variety of puppet types. Taken by itself, this is a decent, but short, stop. If the staff are there, this makes the museum a 5 star attraction. They have an incredible knowledge of puppetry and are actively creating for festivals, movies, and TV. Don't come expecting room after room of exhibits. This is a small museum run by passionate people. If that is your thing, be sure to put this on your list of things to do in Portland. If you want to wander a large museum on your own, this one isn't for you.
MoreAwesome experience! We were the only ones there during our visit, and the curator happily told us stories about several of the sets of puppets and let our two kids interact (supervised) with some of them. They have puppets and information not just from recent times, but also from hundreds (or for information thousands) of years ago really bring interesting cultural context into puppets. The puppets were interesting, as were the signs, but the interaction with the curator is what made this museum pure gold. It is quite small (our understanding is they have many more puppets and rotate displays).
MoreI am a puppet that lives and works in this museum. I’m originally from Josefov (Prague, Czechia). I moved to Portland, Oregon, United States of America in the 1990s. When I arrived at the Museum (regretfully surrendered by my family) I had been making my living as a peddler. I was tired and needed to rest. So I rested. In Prague, I had been strung by a doll maker and now (this year!) I have been provided with a walker bar. I am now working as a philosopher, reading Kafka and Benjamin, and beginning my practice of bibliomancy. Directing and casting plays are in my near future. My companions are two friendly finger puppets: a one-eyed cat (the Professor) and a muffin man (the Baker). Come say hi!
MoreSomething different to do while wandering around Portland. Colorful, interesting, informative. Loved it.
MoreA small space packed to the gills with all things puppet. Very sweet and friendly curators will give you space or spend as much time with you as you like discussing the exhibits. Passionate, genuine and kind people sharing their vast knowledge.
