Sydney Goldstein Theater - San Francisco Theater

Conveniently located in the San Francisco Performing Arts District, the Sydney Goldstein Theater, formerly Nourse Theater, is a historic landmark in itself, apart from being an entertainment venue. Built in the year 1926, the theater plays host to stand up comedy, plays, concerts and is mostly renowned for lecture series by City Arts & Lectures. Constructed in Spanish Revival style, the bright red awnings and classical decor adds a traditional charm to the venue. Ornate chandeliers shed light on the bright red seats and a proscenium stage with bright red curtains. All these elements lend themselves nicely to a classical concert or a period drama. Renamed after Sydney Goldstein, the theater is a cultural symbol of San Francisco.

A Seamless Evening Out in SF! The austere Sydney Goldstein Theater is sandwiched amongst some busy streets in downtown San Francisco, so I opted to allow 30 extra minutes to park and walk to the restaurant before attending our evening event there. By taking right turns, you can go around the block and look for street parking on Hayes, Van Ness (that's where I found my spot), Fell, and Franklin. SF Jazz is right in that part of town, too, so you'll see the building and nice murals across the street of famous jazz artists. Once you walk inside and have your tickets scanned, you'll see that this is a nicely maintained theater with velvet seats and a terrifically ornate ceiling. The seats are banked well, so we had a full view of the stage. Happily, my knees were not touching the seat in front of me. I wouldn't say the row was spacious, but it was quite acceptable and better than some equivalent, older SF theaters where the seating is cramped. Good acoustics. No issues. Perfectly fine, unremarkable staff, wait time, and restrooms. We did not purchase any concessions. I am very glad we went here.
