On January 8, 2011, US Representative Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people were shot at a Congress on your corner event. The Memorial commemorates this event with gardens for each of the six people killed, fountains, and a garden walk behind the Old Pima County Courthouse (which, along with the gem and mineral museum, houses the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center). If you're visiting the beautiful courthouse, step out back (west) to see this A number of symbols on top of lamps along the path have around 100 different symbols. The main one is an “infinity” symbol named “Embrace that resembles the 8 in January 8.This is a peaceful place surrounded by tall(ish) buildings, just across Alameda Street from the Tucson Museum of Art. There's almost no information about the Park along the garden walk -- mostly just signs naming each of the gardens. Reading The January 8th Memorial website will give you lots of background.
