Reviews
tripadvisorTo be fair to the hotel, I was quite jet lagged after a 6 time zone switch and still shocked at how expensive things have gotten in my old home town. Balance those caveats with the fact I have traveled extensively in the US and Europe for well voer 50 years. I have stayed at at least 70-80 hotels in Manhattan and at one point in my life was a real estate lawyer with a company that owned and mortgaged plenty of hotels.A long winded way of saying the stay was adequate but not inspiring. The people are nice enough and the location is ideal for the neighborhood. The halls are dreary and underscore the less than distinguished pedigree of the building. My room was large, minimalist, adequate and uninspired. At least it was quiet. Bed, sink and shower were fine, although whoever decided to leave out a wall panel in the shower enclosure never used it. Liquid soap has its advantages, but the bottles often get stuck. My recollectoion of the room is plain vanilla. Some of the furnishings could have come from Ikea. With less than 24 hours in the city and 16 in the hotel, a decent dinner and breakfast were a plus. Better than average, but not by much.
MoreThe location of this hotel is beyond convenient. The subway is literally steps away from the hotel's entrance. The concierge Mario was amazing! He helped us navigate our short visit to get most out of our exploration of New York. We owe him thanks for making our visit here truly memorable. I also appreciate the wonderful job the housekeeper did at maintaining our room especially considering we had a messy toddler. The cleanliness made us extremely comfortable with the room.
MoreWe visited for our 39th anniversary and for my husband to give respects to a friend/fellow soldier that passed on 9/11 for the 25th anniversary. We were shocked to find there was not a chair in our room - We repeatedly asked several times over several days for a chair and were told they would get right back to us. Nope, they completely blew us off- never a follow-up. Nowhere to sit except on the bed or a tiny desk chair without a real back on it. The lounge/bar was never open until the night before we left. To make matters worse - the shower had terrible mold and the wall to shower was frosted glass that was the outer wall to the room (which meant you couldn't turn the bathroom light on if your partner was sleeping without flooding the room with light/see photo). We had a beautiful view of some of the mold from the bed along the edge of the frosted glass. Not what we expected or paid for. I waited a while to post this because I explained in detail what happened/the way we were treated/Lack of response and how bad the bathroom was - explained I had pictures if they wanted them. NO response. So I will share my photos below with you/hopefully this will help someone make a better decision than we did.
MoreOften, I don’t understand the reviews and what high or low expectations people have. Perhaps opinions depend on demographics and where a person is from. NYC is notorious for small and wildly expensive hotel rooms. Larger rooms are usually found in poor locations or in innocuous chain hotels. Finding a lovely, modern, design forward, boutique hotel with a copious room, having great storage, a comfortable bathroom, and great AC in the heart of Tribeca is a find. The Smyth Tribeca delivers on all counts and has reasonable prices. The Smyth Tribeca is a wonderful hotel. We were greeted at the door by Bart, the hotel's all-purpose guy, who is from the lovely City of Gdansk, Poland. If you need anything, ask Bart. The Smyth is surrounded by great restaurants, bars, and music clubs, and we could walk to the Financial District, Ground Zero, Battery Park, Soho, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Nolita, Noho, and the Lower East Side. For anywhere else, the Chambers Street subway is ten steps from the Smyth and can whisk you uptown in minutes. There’s a decent restaurant and nice Bar right in the Smyth if you want a lazy day to lounge. Housekeeping, one of the headaches of every hotel, was excellent at the Smyth and knew when you'd left the room for a timely cleaning. One of the best aspects of the Smyth was its pricing. We stayed in the least expensive king room and still had plenty of space for our massive luggage and overpacking. The Smyth Tribeca is a great deal and a great hotel for New York City.
MoreMy husband and I stayed at the Smyth for one evening and it was great visit. Check-in was easy, the hotel is located close to the subway and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. Our corner room on the 4th floor was spacious and clean. The bathroom was well appointed and minimalistic. Although our view wasn’t much (it faced another building) we were generally very happy with the room.Housekeeping was super fast to bring up toiletries and room service delivered our morning coffee quickly as well. Checkout was a breeze. We would definitely stay again!
