The McAllen Botanical Garden, also called the McAllen Nature Center, is a picturesque park in the heart of the city. At 59 acres (23 hectares), it is one of the largest of its kind and is rich in flora and fauna. This verdant space boast old trees and dense meadows that are home to numerous species of birds, butterflies and reptiles, including the endangered indigo snake and horned lizard.
