tripadvisorI would love to give this place a good review, but I can't as when I went it was closed.I was staying about 20 minutes away by car and, having googled it to see if it was open, ordered an Uber and went. No sooner had I been dropped off I wandered to the front door only to see a sign saying it was only open two days a week. Whoever manages this place really needs to update the sites info on google.
MoreMy husband and I visited Bleak House during a recent trip to Knoxville and had a great experience. As others have said, it is wise to call a few days before your arrival just to make sure that someone will be available to give you a tour. The house is staffed by volunteers, so sometimes advance notice might be required. That said, it is well worth a bit of extra planning to get to be one of the lucky visitors to Bleak House. It is a beautiful historic home with an interesting collection of period pieces. Our guides, Kaye and Anne, were so much fun! They were personable and took a hands-on approach to history, even letting us touch the bullet hole where a soldier fired a warning shot to convince the lady of the house to get back upstairs during the siege of Knoxville. This is the place where General Longstreet established his headquarters, and the opportunity to be in the room where so much history was made is a treat. Even if you go for no other reason, go to see the tower where Confederate sharp shooters were stationed during the battle and where three young men lost their lives to what the Union soldiers called the prettiest shot of the war. Outside the house, there is a lovely tiered garden that descends toward the river. Sadly, it was locked when we were there, but it looked so appealing through the fence. Even though the grounds were off-limits during our visit, the sweet ladies who were our guides allowed us to eat our picnic lunch on their back patio over-looking the scenic property. We enjoyed our time at Bleak House so much and definitely recommend it as a must-see for those interested in the Civil War in Knoxville.
MoreI will highly recommend calling prior to going as the hours are limited and the website isn't always accurate. There is parking on site and tours are $10. I went during hours posted; however, the tour was not actually available. But there was a lady who worked there that was helping set up for a wedding the following day and agreed to take me through the house without an official tour as she was not familiar with the historical part. I thought that was really kind and made sure to leave a donation.
MoreI am a Yank myself but fully appreciate our shared history. This home is beautiful- we did not go in due to the pandemic and it was closed. It was very cool seeing the bullet holes in the brick.
MoreThe location itself is worth the stop. However, had we not opted for the guided tour, we would have missed the real charm. The house is cared for by the children of the confederacy. As such, you come here to experience that history and viewpoint. For someone born and bread in the north, it was still a good experience.
