The High Line is an urban oasis filled with beautifully manicured landscapes. It sits above the city on old train tracks that were installed as part of the West Side Improvement Project back in 1929. The line was primarily used to transport goods along the Lower West Side, but with the advent of vehicles in the 1950s and more accessible routes elsewhere, the last train eventually ran in 1980. Thereafter, the elevated tracks fell into disrepair, and the whole structure was nearly demolished. It was instead converted into an innovative public park, delighting locals and visitors alike. Today, the High Line is a cherished sanctuary away from the bustle of city life.

I walked the High Line with my wife in July 2026. It's a park built on an old train line, with plants, art and great views of the city. It's close to Chelsea Market, so you can stop to eat. Free and worth it.

MoreWe were encouraged to visit the high line by some visiting family & we were not disappointed! We followed advice and visited early morning ( approx 8-30am) . The walk was quiet, the path spotless & rubbish feee. We also noted that the route is not available to our four legged friends which I’m sure is a positive on a route that can be quite narrow in places- keeps foot traffic moving… The views, both city & river were spectacular. It took us roughly an hour to walk the route and we thoroughly enjoyed this alternative view of the NY skyline.

MoreWe are so glad we were able to fit a walk on the High Line during our Manhattan visit. It is a well-done accessible trail with inviting plantings that offer a green break from the concrete sidewalks. The elevated path offers unusual views of the city. It was a bit crowded, but there are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the scenery, as well as people watch. Would gladly visit again.
