Although Discovery Park has a beach, it is not a prime spot for sunbathing or swimming as the water's a little cold and the beach a little rocky. Most visitors hike the miles of trails, which offer great bird-watching opportunities. One of the trails extends to Puget Sound, and after a lengthy downhill walk, you will find tide pools and a lighthouse.

tripadvisorWe visited here toward the end of a long day which started about 0400 in Ohio so didn't have much energy for a long hike. Even so we found the park to be a beautiful place. We were especially pleased with all the natural trees and plants - tulip trees, Doug firs, apples, mountain ash, blueberries (the latter two not definitely identified but they looked like those types from our experience in the East.) There are well maintained trails all over and as all the guide books promise - good views of Puget Sound. Also found the remnants of Ft Lawton - with handsome officers quarters now privately owned and the base chapel. Reminiscent of Ft Worden on the peninsula where Officer and a Gentleman was filmed. We think it would be nice to have some maps and direction signs here and there and perhaps a few park benches. Maybe they were there but we didn't venture far enough to see them.
MoreI had a difficult time enjoying this spot with the water treatment plant in the middle of the park. It might have nice views of the sound but there are lots of spots around Seattle with great views of the sound that do not have a water treatment plant nearby.
MoreThe day we visited, it was Sunny and 72*. We hiked to the Lighthouse and down to the Beach. We had a Picnic looking out on the water and enjoying the sound of the waves.
MoreDiscovery Park is a beautiful, well kept gem with diverse landscapes forest, meadow, beach, and more. The trails are mostly easy, with a bit of a workout near the shore and lighthouse. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic or birdwatching, and the views of the water and mountains are stunning. Don’t miss the chance to explore all the trails!
MoreWe visited on a hot, clear day and enjoyed the amazing views of the Olympic Mountains, the water with sailboats and ferries, the kids playing in the water. Being water shoes if you plan to enjoy the beach, it's rocky. Also, it can be windy and cool.on the shore.
