tripadvisorWe spent a sunny Tuesday afternoon (3.5 hours) driving and stopping along the 30 miles from Potter Marsh to just before Girdwood, then back to Anchorage. This is such a beautiful drive with mountains lining the road on one side and the waters of Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet on the other side of the road and more mountains across the water. At some points it looks like you are heading straight into a large mountain before the road curves around it.We had no trouble parking at any of the places we stopped, listed below in the order they occur as you drive away from Anchorage:* Potter Historic Site, on right – Old rotary snowplow train (very cool to see) and railroad camp buildings.* McHugh Creek Day Use Area, on left – Waterfall near parking lot; trails; overlook on hill above parking lot; pit toilets. Chugach State Park fee required to park here.* Beluga Point, on right (has its own Trip Advisor entry) – Nice view of rocky formations at the water’s edge; people cross the guardrail and train tracks to walk to those and their beach areas.* Bird Creek Trail Access, on left – Bridge over creek and stairs to the creek banks where people fly fish; trails; pit toilets. Chugach State Park fee required to park here.* Bird Point, on right (has its own Trip Advisor entry) – Statues of beluga whales in parking lot; walkway to overlooks; pit toilets. Chugach State Park fee required to park here.* Four turnouts on right – Each turnout has different interpretive signs, some have benches with windbreaks, all have beautiful views of the water, mud flats, and mountains.* Turnout on left – Walked a short distance to a waterfall that we saw from the road.We saw several other trailheads along this drive that are part of Chugach State Park.
MoreThis is a beautiful drive with great scenery and blue water and blue skies and snow capped mountains. There are also mud flats at low tide with the backdrop off some of the most impressive mountain peaks around. This was an area that Captain James Cook (the Englishman who opened up Australia) attempted to find the passage between the Pacific and Atlantic on his third voyage on Resolution and failed. Cook was killed in the Hawaiin Islands after his visit to Alaska.
MoreWe toured this by car, absolutely gorgeous! We didn't spot a sheep but we did see a moose. There were several places to stop and explore.
MoreDrove this highway all the way to Girdwood. Turned around at Alyeska Resort where we road the tram to the top of the mountain. Absolutely stunning views along the highway and at Alyeska.
MoreFantastic drive along the highway to Seaard! Several great lookout spots on the way and scenery is awesome! Highly recommend as a can’t miss!
