Holy Family Cathedral Catholic Church Catholic Church ·$

This structure was moved in the 1920s from the tiny city of Knik, by horse and sleigh, 57 miles south to Anchorage. Church members began adding to the building (late 30s), but were interrupted by the war and did not complete its construction until 1952. A statue of a praying saint and a plaque commemorating Pope John Paul II's visit in 1981 are in front of this Cathedral. During the Pope's stay, he held a Mass attended by 50,000 people at the nearby park.

A Great looking Art Deco style Cathedral Church but sadly, in a sign of the times is locked when not in use. It was a pity as it looked an interesting take on the norm. The Church is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dominican Order celebrating Masses at the site.

We visited for Sunday mass the day before our cruise. A very pretty church easy walk from hotel. The stained glass is wonderful.

Visiting during Easter was sublime. I feel rejuvenated such that nothing else could really do. Friendly people, beautiful stained-glass windows. Truly miraculous, hard to explain in words. Come and see for yourself! :)

A nice little church that Pope John Paul II visited in 1981.We stumbled upon this as we were walking around Anchorage and back to our hotel. It was closed but seems to be quite a large property with not just the church but a visitor center / gift shop which I can only imagine is capitalizing on the visit from Pope John Paul II since I haven’t seen a church property this large before.

The cathedral was closed but we enjoyed visiting as it is the seat of the Catholic Church in Alaska. The architecture is unusual as it has a very clean and sleek appearance, so different from the highly decorated Gothic style we normally see. We really appreciated seeing this very beautiful building.
